Career-related learning at Nethergate is a journey for all pupils from primary to sixth form. It is about broadening pupils’ horizons, challenging stereotypes and discrimination and helping pupils to develop the skills and sense of self that will enable them to reach their full potential. Our curriculum intends to:

  • Support pupils to invest in themselves, recognise their own strengths and values
  • Take responsibility for developing their work readiness, skills, adaptability and resilience
  • Encourage learner voice by giving them a say in their own personal development to maintain motivation and engagement
  • Help pupils to recognise and tackle the barriers to fair and equal treatment
  • Teach pupils through real-life contacts, community experiences and a curriculum appropriate for their needs

Nethergate Academy is committed to supporting all pupils to develop high aspirations and consider a broad and ambitious range of careers. Pupils will broaden their awareness, aspirations and expectations, whilst having a realistic view of the type of job and entry level appropriate to their achievements. We aim to inspire every pupil through real-life contacts with the world of work which can help them to understand where different choices can take them in the future.

At Nethergate Academy we are working towards achieving all 8 Gatsby Benchmarks. We use the CDI and Skills Builder Framework to inform our careers provision. We are working towards achieving the Quality in Careers Standard through Career Mark. We work closely with Futures who provide Independent Information Advice and Guidance.

Nethergate Academy careers programme is reviewed annually. We assess the impact of our careers programme by:

  • Using the COMPASS tool on a termly basis
  • Aligning our strategy with the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks for good careers guidance
  • Analysing pupils' destination data
  • Using the Quality in Careers Standard revalidation cycle which requires a rigorous re-assessment every 2 years

The programme is reviewed continuously using these methods with a full annual review taking place at the end of each academic year, the next date for review is July 2023.
