Mental Health Awareness

Mental health problems can cause distress to individuals and those who care for them. The Prime Minister has said that mental health is one of the “greatest social challenges of our time”. Overall, it is estimated that one in ten children and young people have a diagnosable mental disorder – the equivalent of three pupils in every classroom across the country. Therefore schools and colleges are a vital part of a wider systems approach to promoting positive mental wellbeing and preventing mental illness in children and young people.

'The national focus on children and young people’s mental health in recent years has been long overdue and welcome. The new funds government have invested in this area have generated a wealth of activity and momentum to transform our children and young people’s mental health services – with some success'.

Sarah brennan, Young Minds CEO

Nethergate employs a professional councillor who is available to work with students who are facing mental health difficulties. In addition, a range of other support mechanisms are employed throughout the academy, such as 'Bubble Time', to ensure that our young people feel safe, included and given opportunities to talk through any worries they have before they reach a crisis point.

For more information on how Nethergate supports students' mental health, please contact Mrs Heery (Designated Safeguarding Lead and SENCO).
